CEO & Founder
Jason Calacanis is a serial entrepreneur and a (hyper)active angel investor. His current projects include the following:
Inside.com: a curated, mobile news App that provides a curated list of the most important news in the world, 24 hours a day. This is done by writing brief summaries of stories (called “updates”). By scanning a list of these stories, readers can quickly catch up on a given topic. For example: inside.com/space, inside.com/movies, inside.com/newyorkcity, inside.com/media.
Angel investing in two to three startups a month. Known for being one of the first investors in Uber and Thumbtack (both now “unicorns” in investing terms), he is equally proud of the startups he has invested in that have yet to reach that status. Follow Jason’s investment activity at the website AngelList, which allows qualified investors to invest alongside him. Visit angel.co/jason for details.
LAUNCH Festival: Jason’s startup conference is now the largest in the world, with over 10,000 attendees. It takes place each spring (March 2-4 in 2015) and information is available at LAUNCH.CO. Jason runs this event at a breakeven, as a service to fellow founders. Most participants attend the event on scholarship, with the $1.4M budget covered by sponsors.
This Week in Startups: Jason’s five-year-old podcast is now the largest startup show in the world, with more than 500 episodes reaching over 100,000 people each. Visit thisweekinstartups.com for details.
